The face in the sun motif is common throughout Nepal, Tibet and India and has religious significance in both Buddhism and Hinduism (where Mitra is the Sun God and bestower of all bounties on Earth).
On the Nepalese Flag the Sun symbolises fierce resolve and the hope Nepal will last as long as the Sun. Until 1962 the Nepalese flag depicted the sun emblem as a human face.
